How to update my domain's owner (registrant) or contact details
Every domain has contact details recorded at the registry: the registrant (the legal owner), plus administrative, technical and billing contacts. Approval emails for transfers, and verification requests, go to these addresses. Keep them current.
These are separate from your client area profile. Changing your client area details doesn't change the domain's contacts.
Change contact details
- Log in to the client area at portal.webway.host.
- Go to Domains → My Domains.
- Click Manage next to the domain.
- Open Contact Information.
- Edit the registrant, admin, technical or billing contact. You can tick Use existing account details to copy from your client area profile, or enter details separately.
- Click Save Changes.
The update is sent to the registry immediately. WHOIS shows the new details within a few hours.
Changing the owner (registrant)
Changing the registrant's name or organisation transfers legal ownership. Extra checks apply.
.com, .net, .org and other international domains
- Make the change under Contact Information as above.
- The old and new registrant may be asked to approve the change by email. Watch both inboxes, including spam.
- After a registrant change, the domain is locked against transfer to another registrar for 60 days. Plan a transfer either before or after, not during.
If the old registrant's email address is dead and can't receive the approval, open a ticket. We may need documents proving ownership.
.co.za domains
Registrant updates for .co.za are made through Webway at ZACR.
- For contact details, make the change under Contact Information.
- For a change of owner, open a support ticket. We'll tell you what's needed.
Selling or handing over a domain
To give a domain to someone who has their own Webway client area account, ask us to move the domain to their account rather than just changing the contacts. Open a ticket from the account that currently holds the domain, with the other person's client area email address.
Keep the contact email valid
- Verification requests. For international domains, a change to the registrant's name or email triggers a verification email. If it isn't confirmed within 15 days, the domain can be suspended until it is. Watch for it and click the link.
- Transfer approvals go to the registrant or admin contact.
- Expiry reminders go to your client area email, not the domain contacts, but keep both current.
WHOIS privacy
Webway doesn't offer WHOIS privacy (ID protection).
Common problems
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Save fails with a validation error | Fill every required field. Phone numbers need the international format, for example +27.211234567 |
| WHOIS still shows old details after a day | Some lookup tools cache results. Try another tool |
| Approval email for a registrant change never arrived | Check spam. Check the old registrant's address is live. Open a ticket if it isn't |
| Domain suspended after the change | You missed the verification email. Open a ticket and we'll resend it |
