How to edit my DNS records

First: are your nameservers Webway's?

The zone editor in your control panel only works if your domain's nameservers are dns1.webway.host and dns2.webway.host. Check with an online "NS lookup" tool, or look at the domain in your client area.

  • Nameservers are Webway's: carry on below.
  • Nameservers are Cloudflare's, your registrar's, or another host's: edit the records there instead. Changes in the control panel won't do anything.

Not sure what a record type does? See DNS records explained: A, CNAME, MX and TXT.

In cPanel: Zone Editor

  1. Log in to cPanel and go to Domains → Zone Editor.
  2. Next to your domain, use the quick buttons + A Record, + CNAME Record or + MX Record for those types, or click Manage to see the whole zone.

Add a record from Manage

  1. Click + Add Record.
  2. Choose the Type.
  3. Name: type the full name, for example shop.example.co.za. cPanel adds the trailing dot. For the domain itself, type example.co.za.
  4. TTL: leave the default (14400) unless you're planning a change soon, then use 300.
  5. Record (the value): the IP address for A, the target name for CNAME, the mail server for MX (with its Priority), the text for TXT.
  6. Click Save Record.

Edit or delete: in the Manage view, use Edit or Delete on the row. Use the filter buttons at the top to find records faster.

In DirectAdmin: DNS Management

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin and go to Account Manager → DNS Management.
  2. If you have more than one domain, pick it from the selector.
  3. The page lists every record in the zone.

Add a record

  1. Click the button to add a record.
  2. Choose the record Type.
  3. Name: type the short name, for example shop. DirectAdmin adds your domain. For the domain itself, type the full domain with a trailing dot (example.co.za.).
  4. Value: the IP address, target name, or text. For MX, enter the mail server name and the Priority.
  5. TTL: leave the default unless changing soon.
  6. Save.

Edit or delete: use the actions on the record's row. The MX Records page under E-mail Manager also edits MX records and holds the "Use this server to handle my e-mails" setting.

Common tasks

Task Type Name Value
Verify with Google, Microsoft, Facebook TXT @ (the domain) The value they give, pasted exactly
Point a subdomain at another service by IP A shop Their IP address
Point a subdomain at another service by name CNAME shop The name they give, for example shops.myshopify.com
Switch email to Google or Microsoft MX @ Their server, with priority. Delete the old MX first. See How to use Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 email with my Webway domain
Add or fix SPF TXT @ v=spf1 …. Edit the existing one; never have two
Add DMARC TXT _dmarc v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:you@example.co.za
Add DKIM from an outside sender (Mailchimp, Google) TXT or CNAME As given, for example k1._domainkey As given

Rules that save you a support ticket

  • Don't delete the A record for the domain, www or mail unless you're deliberately moving that service elsewhere. Deleting mail breaks every device's email.
  • Don't delete the MX record unless you're switching email providers and adding theirs.
  • Paste values exactly. A missing character in a verification or DKIM string fails silently. Watch for extra spaces at the start or end.
  • A CNAME can't coexist with other records of the same name. Use an A record for the bare domain.
  • Long TXT values (DKIM keys over 255 characters) are split into quoted chunks automatically. Paste the whole thing; don't split it yourself.
  • Changes are live on Webway's nameservers within a minute, but the rest of the internet catches up over a few hours. See How long does DNS propagation take?

Check your change

Use an online DNS lookup tool: enter the name and pick the record type. If it shows the old value, wait; if it shows nothing, check the name you entered.

Still stuck?

Open a support ticket and include:

  • The domain.
  • Exactly which record you're trying to add or change: type, name and value.
  • The instructions from the other service, if you're following theirs (a screenshot or link).
  • What the zone editor shows now (a screenshot).
  • Any error message when saving.
