How to set up private nameservers for my reseller account
What are private nameservers?
Private or branded nameservers use your own domain while pointing to Webway's DNS servers, for example ns1.yourbrand.co.za and ns2.yourbrand.co.za.
They do not create separate DNS infrastructure. Webway must provide the correct IP addresses and configure the reseller service to recognise the branded names.
Choose the nameserver hostnames
Use a domain that you control. Common choices are ns1.yourbrand.co.za and ns2.yourbrand.co.za.
Do not give these nameservers to clients until Webway confirms the IP addresses and server configuration.
Ask Webway for the nameserver details
Open a support ticket and provide:
- Your reseller username
- Whether you use WHM or DirectAdmin
- Your branding domain
- The two nameserver hostnames you want
- The registrar holding the branding domain
Webway will confirm:
- Whether private nameservers are available on your plan
- The IP address for each hostname
- Whether Webway must add server-side aliases
- Whether any panel configuration will be done for you
Register child nameservers at the registrar
At the registrar holding your branding domain, find a feature named one of the following: Register nameserver, Child nameserver, Host record, Glue record or Private nameserver.
Create each hostname with the IP supplied by Webway:
| Hostname | Address |
|---|---|
ns1.yourbrand.co.za |
IP supplied by Webway |
ns2.yourbrand.co.za |
IP supplied by Webway |
This is not the same as adding ordinary NS records to the domain's DNS zone. Glue records are registered with the domain's registrar.
If your branding domain is registered with Webway, ask us in the same ticket and we'll register the child nameservers for you.
Add matching DNS records
The branding domain's DNS zone should also contain A records for the nameserver hostnames, with the same IPs. Webway may add these records or tell you where to add them. Do not guess the IP addresses.
Configure the server
Webway Support sets up the server side for WHM and DirectAdmin reseller accounts once the glue records exist. Tell us in your ticket when they're registered.
Point client domains to the private nameservers
After the glue records and server configuration are active:
- Sign in at the registrar holding the client's domain.
- Replace its current nameservers with your branded nameservers.
- Save the change.
- Allow time for DNS propagation.
- Test the website and email.
Existing client domains are not updated automatically. Changing nameservers affects all DNS-controlled services, including email. Copy any external MX and TXT records before switching.
Test the setup
Confirm that:
- Both branded nameserver hostnames resolve to the supplied IPs.
- The client domain reports the branded nameservers.
- The website resolves correctly.
- Email continues working.
- New DNS records added through the hosting panel become publicly visible.
Do not move production domains until Webway has confirmed that the branded nameservers are ready.
