How to add my email to iPhone or iPad

Before you start

Make sure you have:

  • Your complete email address
  • The mailbox password
  • Your domain name
  • An internet connection

Use IMAP unless you specifically need POP3. IMAP keeps messages and folders synchronised between your devices and webmail.

You can test the mailbox first at https://yourdomain.co.za/webmail. Replace yourdomain.co.za with your own domain.

Add the account

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Open Apps, then Mail.
  3. Select Mail Accounts.
  4. Select Add Account.
  5. Select Other.
  6. Select Add Mail Account.

On older versions of iOS or iPadOS, the path may be Settings › Mail › Accounts › Add Account.

Enter your account details

Setting Value
Name The name recipients should see
Email Your complete email address
Password Your mailbox password
Description Any name you recognise

Select Next, then choose IMAP.

Enter the incoming mail settings

Setting Value
Host Name mail.yourdomain.co.za
User Name Your complete email address
Password Your mailbox password
Port 993
Use SSL Enabled
Authentication Password

Do not leave the username blank, even if Apple marks it as optional.

Enter the outgoing mail settings

Setting Value
Host Name mail.yourdomain.co.za
User Name Your complete email address
Password Your mailbox password
Port 465
Use SSL Enabled
Authentication Password

Port 587 with STARTTLS can be used if port 465 is unavailable.

Outgoing mail requires authentication. Enter the username and password even if Apple marks them as optional.

Save and test the account

  1. Select Next.
  2. Wait while Apple verifies the settings.
  3. Make sure Mail is enabled.
  4. Select Save.
  5. Open Apple Mail.
  6. Send a message to another address you can check.
  7. Reply to that message.

This tests both outgoing and incoming delivery.

If Apple cannot verify the account

Check that:

  • The complete email address is used as the username.
  • The mailbox password works in webmail.
  • The incoming server is mail.yourdomain.co.za.
  • IMAP uses port 993 with SSL/TLS.
  • SMTP uses port 465 with SSL/TLS or 587 with STARTTLS.
  • Your domain's DNS and MX records point to the correct mail server.
  • The mailbox is not full.

See Email server settings: IMAP, POP3 and SMTP and I can't send or receive email: what to check, step by step.

Repeated incorrect password attempts can cause your public IP address to be blocked by the server firewall. Customers cannot view or remove these blocks. Stop retrying if correct settings begin timing out after several failed attempts, and open a support ticket with your public IP address.
