How to add another domain or a subdomain

Domain or subdomain?

An additional domain is a separate registered name, such as anotherdomain.co.za.

A subdomain is part of an existing domain, such as shop.example.co.za.

Each website needs a document root: the folder containing its public files.

Add another domain in cPanel

  1. Sign in to cPanel.
  2. Open Domains.
  3. Select Create A New Domain.
  4. Enter the new domain.
  5. Choose whether it should share the main site's document root.
  6. For a separate website, disable document-root sharing.
  7. Enter or accept a separate folder.
  8. Create the domain.

The main website uses /home/USERNAME/public_html. An additional domain uses the folder selected when it is created. Record that folder before uploading files.

Do not point two unrelated websites at the same document root.

Create a subdomain in cPanel

  1. Open Domains.
  2. Select Create A New Domain.
  3. Enter the complete subdomain, such as shop.example.co.za.
  4. Select or enter its document root.
  5. Create the domain.

Add another domain in DirectAdmin

  1. Sign in to DirectAdmin.
  2. Open Account Manager.
  3. Select Domains.
  4. Select ADD NEW.
  5. Enter the domain.
  6. Review the available options.
  7. Create the domain.

The number of domains you can add depends on your hosting plan.

Its website files belong in /home/USERNAME/domains/DOMAIN/public_html.

Create a subdomain in DirectAdmin

  1. Open Account Manager.
  2. Select Subdomain Management.
  3. Select Add Subdomain.
  4. Enter the subdomain name.
  5. Create it.
  6. Note the document root shown by DirectAdmin.

A subdomain's files go in a folder named after it inside the main domain's public_html, for example public_html/shop.

Upload the website

Upload the site to the document root assigned to that domain or subdomain. See How to upload and manage files with File Manager.

A new folder may contain a placeholder index.html. Delete or replace it when uploading the real website.

Point the DNS to Webway

If the registered domain uses Webway's nameservers, the DNS zone is created automatically.

If DNS is managed elsewhere:

  1. Find the Webway server's IP address. cPanel shows it as Shared IP Address in the General Information panel on the home page. On DirectAdmin, ask support if you can't see it.
  2. Create or update the A record at the external DNS provider.
  3. Remove an incorrect AAAA record if it points to another server.
  4. Allow time for propagation.

For a separately registered domain, see Point my domain to Webway (change nameservers).

Wait for free SSL

Free SSL is issued automatically after the new domain or subdomain resolves to the hosting server. Both the domain and www must point correctly if the certificate should cover both.

If the certificate is not issued, see Why does my website say "Not secure"?
